“Cheap Luxury”!
A winning market-positioning that explains Desoto’s place in the market even today...

Clearly you don’t have the genius to appreciate how DeSoto was the cheap car with luxury and robustness, Dodge was the luxury car with cheapness and robustness, and Plymouth was the robust car with cheapness and luxury.

Oh, man, I wish I could give 5 stars. I can’t stop laughing. That’s hilarious— completely capturing the absurdity of the “progressive level marketing” of the era.
“Let’s see, if I’m the nurse, I buy the Chevy, if I’m the Head Nurse I buy the Pontiac, but if I’m a Resident I buy the Oldsmobile, until I make GP when I buy my Buick.. until I am Head Surgeon I’ll get a Sedan DeVille. But, once I’m running the whole hospital I say “screw GM” and buy the S-Class I’ve always wanted...”

I mean, on the one hand, that is literally how they were ordering what the priorities of a given marques customers would be, and different people have different priorities - which would index the cars by the price point. On the other hand, what if your branding and styling appeal run aground on this model and you pull a “40s Pontiac” where in attempting to thread the needle between cheap and classy and performance you end up with a car that has an “old person” stigma totally by accident? That somehow sticks with the car with some demographics for 30 years despite rebranding attempts, so you have a marque that’s Hot Performance Cars And Also Discount Cadillacs?

In much the same way as the Dodge was the parody of the Chrysler, the Plymouth was the parody of the DeSoto.
